A passkey sign-in sends no message, so it has no per-sign-in cost from a messaging provider. Most apps still need one code per user to prove a phone number or an email at sign-up. See email OTP vs SMS OTP and passkeys vs OTP.

What does an OTP cost in India?
By SMS, about Rs 0.16 to Rs 0.25 a message at list prices (lower by quote), plus 18% GST. By WhatsApp, Meta charges Rs 0.115 for an authentication message, plus your provider's fee. By email, from under a paisa on Amazon SES to free within a provider's monthly allowance.
Why count resends?
Users who do not get a code in time tap Resend, and every resend is billed. The resend rate is the share of codes sent twice. Your own logs give the real figure.
Does SMS OTP need DLT registration?
Yes. Every commercial SMS to an Indian number, OTPs included, must use a business, sender id and template registered on a DLT platform. WhatsApp and email do not use DLT. See SMS OTP cost and DLT.
Is WhatsApp OTP cheaper than SMS?
At Meta's rate of Rs 0.115 it is a little below most SMS list prices. Providers add a fee per message or a monthly plan on top, and the user needs WhatsApp on that number.
How old are these prices?
Checked on each provider's own page on 21 October 2026, and rechecked on the 1st of each month. Dollar prices at Rs 95 to the dollar. If a price here is wrong, email hello@signops.dev and it is corrected.
